Eligible Roth IRA

  • Traditional IRA deductions may not be deductible against Israeli income. Israel does not recognize US IRA contributions as a deduction from Israeli-source income.
  • Roth IRA may not be recognized as tax-exempt by Israel. Growth inside a Roth IRA may be taxable. Best to discuss with our team.
  • Israeli retirement accounts (keren pensia, keren hishtalmut, kupat gemel) are NOT US retirement accounts and do not count toward IRS contribution limits.
  • Early withdrawal penalty: 401(k) or IRA withdrawals before age 59½ generally incur a 10% US penalty plus ordinary income tax.
  • Treaty Article 20 of the US-Israel tax treaty may provide some relief for pension distributions. Consult your advisor for applicability.
  • Backdoor Roth conversions work for US federal tax purposes, but Israel may treat the conversion as a taxable event. Coordinate with both US and Israeli tax advisors.
